Some do's and don'ts
Here are some common sense suggestions by members:
- Do be sensitive to local customs
- Do dress modesty (check whose standards you are using!)
- Do carry some form of photo ID with you at all times
- Do be careful in summer to drink lots of water and avoid dehydration
- Do register with you local embassy when you move to a new country
- Do have health/ travel insurance
- Do not bring pornography into the country
- DO NOT DRINK and drive EVER. Many countries in the Middle East have a zero drink driving tolerance. That means ZERO alcohol!
- Do take a taxi if you think you may drink while out (if you are in a country where drinking is permitted).
- Do not take drugs. Penalties are severe. Codiene is considered a drug in some places
- Do not take pictures of government and military places
- Do not overstay your visa
- Do not eat in public during the day during Ramadan
- Do check out official sites for more information.
When Trouble Strikes
What to do?
Prevention IS the best cure! Education yourself on the laws and norms of your new country NOW! This point cannot be over emphasied.
But what can you do when unavoidable trouble strikes? It depends, of course, on the nature of the problem.
- LEGAL. Is it a legal or labour problem? Perhaps you'll need to find a good lawyer? Can your embassy help or at least point you in the right direction?
- HEALTH. Is it a health problem? Do you have health insurance? Do you need to find a goood doctor or hospital?
Whatever the problem a good network of friends and expats can help you find the help you need.
